Diary > Survival - The essence of BJJ

03/02/2010

I´ve almost lost count of the number of submissions in BJJ. These days there are flying helicopter triple somersault chokes and stuff and Im sure they are all lots of fun to try but my belief the core of BJJ is defence and survival.

Sure we all want to win fights but realistically and strategically its more efficient to be able to escape all the positions and attacks therefore allowing you to impose your submissions on your opponent.

Often in the real world we dont get to choose to fight. Sometimes we are caught off guard being attacked unprovoked from the rear for example and we are on the defensive from the word go. We must keep our cool, perform under pressure as we did in class to be able to survive. Then, once the attack has been defended we can go on the offensive.

Defensively we need to know everything, escape every position, every lock and choke but offensively we only need a handful of high percentage attacks to be successful in the street or in the competition arena. If you cant be controlled or attacked then you cant get beaten.

Same as boxing... defence first hit second.
