Diary > Knowing when to rest.
06/23/2009
Some of you may have noticed I havent been rolling much lately and may even think maybe my passion for theis amazing art has diminished, trust me its quite the opposite.
Ive trained to national and international level in quite a few sports and all of them exact a toll on your body over time and BJJ is no different. One of my favourite sayings is " An average person is always at their best", meaning top level athletes know to be champion you have to have periods where you train hard and some when you dont, or like me you just change sports.
Im not one for resting much, which can be good and bad at times, but as I get older and wiser I know when to listen to my body and having had three major injuries in the last three years so am taking it easy on the mat for a while til its ready to go hard again.
That said, for me its hardly resting. I train every day sometimes up to five hours, in pilates, swimming, weights, mountain biking and national level table tennis, which may sound a bit lame but its the hardest training Ive ever done. Those ex military crazy chinese coaches love to kick your ass with exercises and drills which kill.
So the next time I look a bit tired Ive probably been training all day when youre not around me, and not cos Im a slack ass. I love BJJ more than you could imagine and its so hard to be disciplined and NOT roll when I know its going to hurt my already damaged spinal discs... sometimes Im naughty though and pay for it the whole next week. Anyway, must dash time to teach and watch you guys train and make me jealous. See you on the mat soon.
