Class Descriptions:

General BJJ: Ideal for beginners to intermediate level, classes are fun and students learn fast. Known as the ultimate martial art BJJ uses throws, chokes and joint locks to control and submit an adversary. Classes sometimes include knife and baton self defence.

Throwing Classes: An often overlooked but fundamental part of BJJ is throwing. Classes cater for  beginners to intermediate levels. Students learn to roll, breakfall and throw in a safe and controlled environment.

Competition BJJ: Beginners are welcome but classes focus on specific drills and techniques for those wanting to compete.

MMA: (mixed martial arts ) A class including kicking, punching, throwing and grappling for those wanting an all round workout and self defence system.

No Gi: ( meaning without kimono/uniform ) Having gained popularity amongst the ADCC ( World Submission Championship ) and MMA community No Gi competitions are often held alongside BJJ competitions.  Participants usually wear shorts and a Rash vest ( surf style ) or t shirt. No Gi is fun, fast and provides variety in training and can help in preparation for MMA.

Class structure and organisation:

At  Ground Zero we realise the psychology of the student greatly affects their ability to train  and retain information so are class profile changes throughout the week to accomodate this.

The start of the week ( Mon-Thurs classes) are tightly structured but towards the end of the week (Fri, Sat, Sun) when students are tired from the normal daily grind of life we allow more free training time and less structure.

Class starts with a 10-15 minute warm-up, including sport specific exercises and stretches. Next is a technical session where various techniques are taught based on grade, and depending on grade, the level of resistance is increased until you are able to apply the technique, even on a fully resisting opponent.

The last 40 minutes is set aside for free training. This is the chance to try your skills on others in the class. High grades will help the low ones - not beat them up!  Finally there is a warm down and stretch and time for everyone to catch up and socialise.

Etiquette:

-Bowing whenever walking onto or leaving the matted area, and to the instructor at the end of class is used all over the world as means of showing respect for the academy, the instructor and fellow students.

-Shaking or 'slapping' hands signifies the start and end of a bout so both parties know when the opponent is ready to start or end training with them.

-Please ensure toe and finger nails are trimmed for hygiene purposes.

-Often students use tape for their fingers or toes. If you're one of them, please bring your own tape as tape on the premises is for emergencies only as is the first- aid equipment.
